Micro-Credentials: Challenges and ways to go
Micro-Credentials: Challenges and ways to go
The global pandemic has disrupted European economies and societies, impacting Vocational Education and Training Systems and increasing uncertainty regarding the labour markets, which skills needs must be catered for a sustained recovery period. Micro-Credentials (MCs) are particularly useful for people who want to upskill or reskill to meet labour market needs or to develop professionally after starting work. They are one of the initiatives promoted by the European Commission in the scope of the European Skills Agenda, which targets include the development of a European Approach to micro-credentials, to help widen learning opportunities and strengthen the role of higher education and vocational education and training institutions in lifelong learning by providing more flexible and modular learning opportunities.
This policy debate will be focused on EfVET Members’ experience with the implementation of micro-credentials at the national level and how their approach can be extended to other EU countries (i.e., best practices and links to the European Agenda), on the mechanisms for implementing and recognising MCs (including the creation of a quality assurance system), on the ownership of the process for implementing MCs and also their impact on well-being. A set of questions about these matters will serve as the basis for the session, which will be composed of representatives from relevant national and EU entities coming from the Education (VET and HVET) and Industry sectors.
