META-COIN Project Conference: Results & role of meta-skills

On 26 September, EfVET participated in the final conference of the META-Competences for International Working Environments (META-COIN) project in Brussels. The conference aimed to present the results of the META-COIN project and explore the role of meta-skills in addressing the challenges of rapidly evolving professional environments, with insights on how learners and workers can adapt, innovate, and thrive.

EfVET Executive Director Paolo Nardi underlined the importance of self-awareness as a meta-skill, which is crucial in supporting learners to develop a growth mindset, especially in reality-based learning. Mentioning the unvaluable action of VET in lifelong learning and provision of transversal skills, he proposed to strengthen the role of tutors in training and education, improving skills assessment and consolidate the partnership between VET centres and universities. In the area of digitalization and AI, he also pointed to the growing need to understand ethical implications and rediscover the human dimension of digital learning. EfVET is strongly committed to the topic also via its Inclusive Vocational Excellence & Wellbeing Working Group (https://www.linkedin.com/groups/9236845/).

Sirje Hassinen, Project coordinator at Omnia (Finland), highlighted the core objective of the META-COIN project, i.e. to develop hybrid materials on future meta-skills to promote continuous learning – and showed how skills such as creativity, adaptability, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and problem solving can enhance self-development, strengthen teamwork and help people dealing with change.

Pauline Boivin, Project & Policy Manager at the Lifelong Learning Platform, addressed the challenges in reaching a common language on skills and coherent competence frameworks, especially in the field of transversal competences that help navigate our changing world. She mentioned learning to learn and critical thinking as two essential skills for the digital transition, arguing for a holistic and future-proof approach in lifelong learning.
