Development of curricula on Accessible Tourism for VET Tourism Courses
Summary
Tourism is an economic activity with a broadly positive impact on economic growth and employment in EU. As it is reported in the EC Communication 2010 “Europe, the world’s Nº1 tourist destination” a new political framework for tourism in EU – “The tourism industry represents the third largest socioeconomic activity in the EU, estimated to generate over 10% of the EU GDP and create approximately 12% of all jobs. In addition, the EU remains the world’s Nº1 tourist destination, with 370 million international tourist arrivals in 2008, or 40% of arrivals around the world.” Tourism professionals should have background on the fundaments of the most common disabilities, have the right psychological training to deal with this type of population, have a background on the limitations which different types of barriers cause to the movement of the person with disabilities, should know the legal rights of this type of citizens, should have all the information package which would allow him to do a good estimation on the risks of each activity, etc.
Expected to deliver:
- a training module on Accessible Tourism ready to be applied to any tourism VET course (initial and continuous) across EU Member-States;
- a training tool providing trainees with the right set of skills and competences to deal with the special requirements and demands of accessible tourism;
- an increase awareness of future professionals in the tourism area to the fact that providing better and adequate support for people with special needs can raise new opportunities within the tourism sector;
- an increase self-confidence of tourism professionals when dealing with people with special needs;
- a change in the perception and mentality about people with special needs and improvement of tourism services offer.
