Festival of Skills 2024: Empowering the Future of Education

Bratislava, Slovakia – As a continuation of the European Year of Skills 2023, the Festival of Skills 2024, organized by the State Institute of Vocational Education (ŠIOV) in collaboration with the ministry of education and other key partners, took place from September 23rd to 27th across multiple cities in Slovakia. This week-long event provided a platform for experts, students, educators, and the general public to explore the future of education, with a focus on skill development in the context of digitalization, innovation and improving the quality of education.

1. Opening Conference – Ľubica Gállová (Vice Director for Lifelong Learning, ŠIOV),
Branislav Hadár (Director of the State Institute of Vocational Education)

The festival commenced with the Opening Conference in Bratislava, titled “Future of Education: Technology, Innovation, and Skills.” This high-level event brought together policymakers, educators, and industry professionals to discuss the transformative role of technology in vocational education and training (VET). Key topics included artificial intelligence, data-driven decision-making, the ethical use of technology in education and the green and digital transformations shaping the modern world. The discussions underscored the evolving demands of the job market and the necessity for education systems to adapt and prepare learners for future challenges.

 

2. Salon of Technologies – Presentation on Cybersecurity

Throughout the week, over 40 partner organizations contributed to various educational activities, including workshops, lectures and practical demonstrations, held both – online and in various cities across Slovakia. Participants had the opportunity to develop digital skills, improve project management capabilities, engage in career counseling and explore critical thinking approaches.

 

3. Salon of Technologies – Virtual Reality Showcase

 

One of the key event was the Salon of Technologies on September 25th, titled “The Future of Education with AI.” This exhibition showcased innovative technological solutions for education. Participants, including educators and digital coordinators, were introduced to the latest tools in AI, virtual and augmented reality, and e-learning applications, all designed to enhance the learning process. Presenters demonstrated simulations for vocational training, educational games and media literacy apps, while attendees could directly engage with these cutting-edge technologies at various stands.

4. A successful student competitor at EuroSkills 2023 (Academy of Secondary-School Talents)

Another highlight was the Academy of Secondary-School Talents on September 26th, which recognized the creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of Slovakia’s young talents. Students from vocational schools presented their projects, many of which focused on addressing sustainability challenges and supporting local communities. Their innovative solutions showcased a commitment to using their skills to positively influence their surroundings, inspiring younger peers to actively participate in shaping the future.

 

5. Academy of Secondary-School Talents

Overall, the Festival of Skills 2024 not only emphasized the importance of skills development but also fostered collaboration among educational institutions, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. By bringing together a diverse audience and providing a forum for discussion, innovation, and practical learning, the festival reinforced the crucial role education and skills play in driving progress in today’s rapidly changing world.
