Europe is not starting from zero.
We already have strong foundations for digital competence, VET development and responsible technology. But as AI rapidly transforms both education and the workplace, a new challenge is becoming increasingly urgent:
How do we turn these foundations into practical AI competence for VET teachers and trainers?
Knowing how to use an AI tool is not enough.
Teachers need the competence and confidence to decide when AI adds value, when it does not, how it should change teaching and assessment, and how we ensure that it strengthens — rather than replaces — critical thinking, professional judgement and real learning.
And this cannot be achieved through isolated AI workshops.
In Spain, K-tuin Educación and IAcademia, together with UCAM, have started addressing this challenge through a structured professional-development pathway: 5 university microcredentials, 20 courses, more than 325 hours of training, and a pathway of up to 16 ECTS, covering AI foundations, assessment and data, ethics and AI management, pedagogy and professional development.
But we don’t believe the answer is simply to export a Spanish model to Europe.
Spain is our starting point, not our destination.
At EfVET in Brussels, we want to meet VET institutions and partners from across Europe to explore a bigger question: can we build on existing European frameworks to develop practical, recognised and adaptable AI professional-development pathways for VET teachers?

Different countries. Different VET systems. Different professional sectors. But one shared challenge: preparing teachers to lead learning in the AI era.
We are coming to Brussels with experience, but also with questions — and looking forward to meeting VET providers and networks, universities, teacher-training organisations, industry and technology partners, and qualification and certification bodies interested in helping shape what comes next.
Europe already has many foundations.
Now we need to turn AI competence into teacher practice.
